NOVELL LAUNCHES NETWARE 4.0
Washington, D.C.--March 10, 1993--Novell today announced
NetWare 4.0, the company's next generation network operating system
designed for global enterprise networks. The product provides
advanced network services to customers regardless of time, distance,
location and network diversity. NetWare 4.0 combines customers'
multi-server, multi-platform, multi-lingual networks into a single
secure system that is easy to use, administer and manage.
"The networking industry has evolved to the point where customers
are using networks as a reliable, high-performance, and cost-effective
way of running their businesses," said Raymond J. Noorda, Novell's
president and chief executive officer. "NetWare 4.0 allows customers
to comfortably take the next step in the networking evolution. By
maintaining our technical leadership and providing a high level of
service, support and training, NetWare 4.0 will allow customers to
accelerate their use of networks."
"We live in a global market place that requires the seamless access,
integration and distribution of information needed to support our
customers and manage our global risk exposure," said Craig Goldman,
chief information officer for Chase Manhattan Bank. "NetWare 4.0's
directory service and multi-language support will allow us to remove
the geographic and linguistic boundaries that exist today greatly
simplifying the management and administration of our network."
New NetWare Functionality
One of NetWare's strengths, as proven by NetWare 3.11, is its ability
to provide an integration platform that allows customers to connect their
large heterogeneous computing environments into an enterprise network.
Additionally, Unix has played a key role in these enterprise systems as both
a client and application server. The NetWare environment integrates
NetWare 3.11 and Unix with the advanced capabilities of NetWare 4.0 to
provide a complete enterprise solution for customers. The new NetWare 4.0
capabilities include:
* NetWare Directory Services (NDS) provides a single view of the
network and gives customers seamless, global access to all company
resources allowing them to reduce administrative costs and increase
productivity
* New security and auditing capabilities that utilize public key
cryptography, provide a more secure environment for protecting vital
corporate data and ensure that security policies are maintained
* Improvements in wide-area connectivity allow for faster response,
lower bandwidth utilization and greater productivity across the network
* Improved management capabilities that give network managers more
information about the server for easier and more effective management
* New graphical administration tools that enhance administrative
productivity
* Multiple language support allowing customers to access and manage
the network using their native language
* Additional Storage Management Service (SMS) target service agents
(TSAs) allow customers to backup DOS, Windows, and OS/2 clients, as
well as NetWare 3.11 and NetWare 4.0 servers.
* Upgrade utilities that automate the transfer of information from
NetWare 2.x or 3.x binderies to the NetWare 4.0 directory to greatly
reduce the cost and time needed to upgrade to NetWare 4.0
* NetWare 4.0 can run in a non-dedicated mode on the OS/2 2.x
platform, giving customers the functionality of NetWare 4.0 in a
multi-tasking environment*
Additional NetWare 4.0 Capabilities
In addition to the new functionality in NetWare 4.0, Novell is
working closely with third-party developers and its own product
groups to provide added capabilities through NetWare Loadable Modules
(NLMs). NLMs will be available in two categories. The first category
are NetWare 3.11 NLMs that will be compatible with NetWare 4.0. The
second category of NLMs will take advantage of the new NetWare 4.0
capabilities such as NetWare Directory Services. Customers can expect
to see products in both categories within 90 days after NetWare 4.0
ships.
More Than a Product
NetWare 4.0 provides the functionality needed to make a boundless
computing environment possible, however customers need more that just
a new product. Just as important are training, service, and support
programs to help customers implement a successful network they can run
their businesses on.
"Novell provides United Parcel Service with responsive and effective
support, service and education," said Ralph Perez, project manager,
Network Systems Programming Group at UPS. "Novell's commitment in
this area keeps our NetWare-based mission critical applications up
and running."
At the time NetWare 4.0 ships, Certified NetWare Instructors (trained
through Novell Authorized Education Centers) will be ready to train
users and administrators in three comprehensive courses. These
courses include a three-day update for experienced network
administrators, a two-day workshop that will provide instruction and
practice installing and configuring a NetWare 4.0 server, and a
four-day network administrator course that gives system administrators
all of the information necessary to successfully administer a
NetWare 4.0 network. Additionally, online documentation and
computer-based training will be included with NetWare 4.0 to help
familiarize customers with NetWare 4.0 features.
Novell's commitment to quality service and support will
continue with NetWare 4.0. Novell works closely with hundreds of
independent resellers and service providers to give them the necessary
training and support tools to offer the primary means of quality support
to customers.
For additional support, customers can take advantage of NetWire
and NetWare Express, Novell's electronic service and support bulletin
boards. Customers can also receive support on a per incident or
contract basis from Novell's technical support group which provides
hotline support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
