  2. NOVELL LAUNCHES NETWARE 4.0
  3.  
  4.      Washington, D.C.--March 10, 1993--Novell today announced 
  5. NetWare 4.0, the company's next generation network operating system 
  6. designed for global enterprise networks.  The product provides 
  7. advanced network services to customers regardless of time, distance, 
  8. location and network diversity.  NetWare 4.0 combines customers' 
  9. multi-server, multi-platform, multi-lingual networks into a single 
  10. secure system that is easy to use, administer and manage.

  12.      "The networking industry has evolved to the point where customers 
  13. are using networks as a reliable, high-performance, and cost-effective 
  14. way of running their businesses," said Raymond J. Noorda, Novell's 
  15. president and chief executive officer.  "NetWare 4.0 allows customers 
  16. to comfortably take the next step in the networking evolution.  By 
  17. maintaining our technical leadership and providing a high level of 
  18. service, support and training, NetWare 4.0 will allow customers to 
  19. accelerate their use of networks."

  21.      "We live in a global market place that requires the seamless access, 
  22. integration and distribution of information needed to support our 
  23. customers and manage our global risk exposure," said Craig Goldman, 
  24. chief information officer for Chase Manhattan Bank.  "NetWare 4.0's 
  25. directory service and multi-language support will allow us to remove 
  26. the geographic and linguistic boundaries that exist today greatly 
  27. simplifying the management and administration of our network."

  29.  New NetWare Functionality
  30.  
  31.      One of NetWare's strengths, as proven by NetWare 3.11, is its ability 
  32. to provide an integration platform that allows customers to connect their 
  33. large heterogeneous computing environments into an enterprise network.  
  34. Additionally, Unix has played a key role in these enterprise systems as both 
  35. a client and application server.  The NetWare environment integrates 
  36. NetWare 3.11 and Unix with the advanced capabilities of NetWare 4.0 to 
  37. provide a complete enterprise solution for customers.  The new NetWare 4.0 
  38. capabilities include:

  40. *    NetWare Directory Services (NDS) provides a single view of the 
  41.      network and gives customers seamless, global access to all company 
  42.      resources allowing them to reduce administrative costs and increase 
  43.      productivity
  44.  
  45. *    New security and auditing capabilities that utilize public key 
  46.      cryptography, provide a more secure environment for protecting vital 
  47.      corporate data and ensure that security policies are maintained
  48.  
  49. *    Improvements in wide-area connectivity allow for faster response, 
  50.      lower bandwidth utilization and greater productivity across the network
  51.  
  52. *    Improved management capabilities that give network managers more 
  53.      information about the server for easier and more effective management
  54.  
  55. *    New graphical administration tools that enhance administrative 
  56.      productivity
  57.  
  58. *    Multiple language support allowing customers to access and manage 
  59.      the network using their native language
  60.  
  61. *    Additional Storage Management Service (SMS) target service agents 
  62.      (TSAs) allow customers to backup DOS, Windows, and OS/2 clients, as 
  63.      well as NetWare 3.11 and NetWare 4.0 servers.

  65. *    Upgrade utilities that automate the transfer of information from 
  66.      NetWare 2.x or 3.x binderies to  the NetWare 4.0 directory to greatly 
  67.      reduce the cost and time needed to upgrade to NetWare 4.0

  69. *    NetWare 4.0 can run in a non-dedicated mode on the OS/2 2.x 
  70.      platform, giving customers the functionality of NetWare 4.0 in a 
  71.      multi-tasking environment*

  74. Additional NetWare 4.0 Capabilities

  76. In addition to the new functionality in NetWare 4.0, Novell is 
  77. working closely with third-party developers and its own product 
  78. groups to provide added capabilities through NetWare Loadable Modules 
  79. (NLMs).  NLMs will be available in two categories.  The first category 
  80. are NetWare 3.11 NLMs that will be compatible with NetWare 4.0.  The 
  81. second category of NLMs will take advantage of the new NetWare 4.0 
  82. capabilities such as NetWare Directory Services.  Customers can expect 
  83. to see products in both categories within 90 days after NetWare 4.0 
  84. ships.

  86. More Than a Product
  87.  
  88. NetWare 4.0 provides the functionality needed to make a boundless 
  89. computing environment possible, however customers need more that just 
  90. a new product.  Just as important are training, service, and support 
  91. programs to help customers implement a successful network they can run 
  92. their  businesses on.

  94. "Novell provides United Parcel Service with responsive and effective 
  95. support, service and education," said Ralph Perez, project manager, 
  96. Network Systems Programming Group at UPS. "Novell's commitment in 
  97. this area keeps our NetWare-based mission critical applications up 
  98. and running."

  100. At the time NetWare 4.0 ships, Certified NetWare Instructors (trained 
  101. through Novell Authorized Education Centers) will be ready to train 
  102. users and administrators in three comprehensive courses.  These 
  103. courses include a three-day update for experienced network 
  104. administrators, a two-day workshop that will provide instruction and 
  105. practice installing and configuring a NetWare 4.0 server, and a 
  106. four-day network administrator course that gives system administrators 
  107. all of the information necessary to successfully administer a 
  108. NetWare 4.0 network.  Additionally, online documentation and 
  109. computer-based training will be included with NetWare 4.0 to help 
  110. familiarize customers with NetWare 4.0 features.

  112.           Novell's commitment to quality service and support will 
  113. continue with NetWare 4.0.  Novell works closely with hundreds of 
  114. independent resellers and service providers to give them the necessary 
  115. training and support tools to offer the primary means of quality support 
  116. to customers.

  118.      For additional support, customers can take advantage of NetWire 
  119. and NetWare Express, Novell's electronic service and support bulletin 
  120. boards.  Customers can also receive support on a per incident or 
  121. contract basis from Novell's technical support group which provides 
  122. hotline support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  124. Pricing and Availability
  125.  
  126.      NetWare 4.0 will begin shipping March 31, 1993.  The product will 
  127. be available in 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-, 250-, 500-, and 1,000-user 
  128. configurations.  NetWare 4.0 will initially be available in English 
  129. with French, Italian, German and Spanish versions available shortly 
  130. after the product ships.  In addition, Novell is working with Novell 
  131. Japan to develop a Japanese version of NetWare 4.0 which will be 
  132. announced later this year.  Novell Gold and Platinum resellers may 
  133. sell all versions of the product.  Additionally, Novell Authorized 
  134. resellers may sell versions of the product through and including
  135. the 50-user configuration.  For pricing outside of the U.S., customers 
  136. should contact their local Novell reseller.

  146. receive NetWare 4.0 following the product's release.
